Ringworm - What it is and How to Cure It

Ringworm - What it is and How to Remedy It
Post by Staggerlee Phillips

Ringworm is a skin infection that seems in a ring pattern on the skin. In spite of its name, it is not brought on by a worm, nor does a worm form the scaly ring that distinguishes this kind of skin infection. Ringworm is a fungal infection that is triggered by diverse sorts of fungi, such as trichophyton rubrum (which also causes jock itch), trichophyton mentagrophytes and

Photo: Jon Jones, Kate Upton and Jane Lynch pal around at Daytona 500

A UFC champ, a Sports Illustrated swimsuit cover model and an Emmy-winning actress met up at the Daytona 500 today. Jon Jones was an honorary race official, while Kate Upton and Jane Lynch were there to spend some time being awesome.

The race was delayed until Monday, so they had plenty of time to discuss throwing elbows, photoshoots, and wearing track suits. Hopefully, Lynch was offering "Bones" a cameo on "Glee." Nothing could prepare him better for his fight with Rashad Evans than a song and dance with New Directions.

Jones also got to meet some of the biggest names in racing: And he even got a car with his name on it.

UFC on Fuel TV 1 postfight: Dana White hammers himself and the NSAC

Dana White always says what's on his mind. He's not afraid to call someone out even if it's himself.

Seconds after Jake Ellenberger crawled across the finish line to win his three-round fight against Diego Sanchez, fans began asking "what happened to all UFC main events being five rounds?"

Fuel TV's Ariel Helwani asked White.

"Because we blew it. It should've been a five round fight. [...] I'm looking at the fight going ... 'yeah, this should've been five rounds.' I think that when Diego and Ellenberger went back in there for that fourth the place would've went crazy. People were ready for it at home," said White.

White wouldn't name names. He took the blame. He confirmed it was not Fuel TV's decision. More importantly, he said all main events will be five rounders. Back in June, White announced that would be the case for all main events. Somehow this fight slipped through the cracks.

White also commented on the latest with Nick Diaz's likely suspension coming from the Nevada State Athletic Commission. He knows Diaz will probably get pounded and he has little problem with that.

"How about the Nevada State Athletic Commission royally kissed Floyd Mayweather's ass when he walked in there. This guy is going to jail," White said. "The judge is allowing him to not go to jail until he has his fight. Right?"

It still annoys White that Chael Sonnen was denied a license by the state to coach on "The Ultimate Fighter." Meanwhile, Floyd Mayweather facing jail time had his jail arrival delayed and got a license from the commission to fight on May 5.

"You know how much money we bring into Las Vegas every year with the fights that we put on? You know how much we contribute to the city of Las Vegas? Do you think for a second if we had a fighter that was going to go to jail that the athletic commission would license him to fight so that the fight could go on? There's no way in hell," White said. "Am I the only guy on this [expletive] planet who thinks that's crazy? Seriously. It just blows my mind."

White was very complimentary of the effort turned in by Sanchez calling him a professional. When asked about the right weight class for Sanchez, White said he can fight anywhere he wants.

He wasn't so complimentary of Dave Herman. A chiseled, athletic heavyweight, Herman fought well in the first round but lacked focus to stick with a gameplan against Stefan Struve. The 6-foot-11 Struve eventually used his length and effective combinations to put Herman away. White didn't rip Herman's performance, but criticized his prefight antics.

"I like Dave Herman. The stuff that he pulled this week? I can't stand that stuff," White told Fuel TV.

That stuff was Herman growing a huge beard and then dying his beard and thick body hair all black. Not the biggest deal, but when you lose the way Herman did, it opens the door for the critics.

"Listen, if you want to get noticed ... get noticed for your fighting skills," White said. "Not for coming in like a gorilla or wearing pink scarfs. And coming in to "Macho Man?" As I was sitting there, I'm thinking 'did I seriously let him come into this song?'"

White said he's not anti-Village People, but he's not into the joking around.

Photo: Benson Henderson celebrates UFC lightweight title with his mom

When Benson Henderson walked out of the cage after winning the UFC lightweight title, he walked right past security and the UFC staff who was directing him towards the locker room. He had to go celebrate with the woman who has supported him throughout his career: his mom.

In a sweet moment, Henderson hugged his mother. She pulled back and grabbed at his belt, bursting with pride over her son's accomplishment. Henderson provided another great performance in beating Frankie Edgar, but didn't forget to say thank you to his mom.

He admitted that he did hear her cheering during his fight.

""My mom has a pretty distinct voice. I can hear her everywhere," Henderson said.

Three Stars: Hatsu Hioki, Anthony Pettis and Mark Hunt

UFC 144 brought the promotion back to Japan with a top-to-bottom exciting card, complete with a tight, five-round thriller between new champion Benson Henderson and Frankie Edgar in the main event. Who stood out?

No. 1 star -- Hatsu Hioki: After debuting in the UFC with a split-decision win over George Roop, Hioki fulfilled his promise as one of the world's best featherweights with a three-round beatdown of Bart Palaszewski. Though his stand-up needs work, he's the best current featherweight challenger out there for Jose Aldo's belt.

[ Related: Kevin Iole's UFC 144 breakdown ]

No. 2 star -- Anthony Pettis: Though Pettis' title shot was spoiled by Clay Guida, he kicked his way back into title contention on Saturday with a knockout of Joe Lauzon. He won a $65,000 Knockout of the Night bonus, and a possible rematch with Henderson.

No. 3 star -- Mark Hunt: Between 2006 and 2010, Hunt suffered six straight MMA losses. It was not a reach to think he wasn't going to be in the UFC's heavyweight division much longer. Things changed in 2011, as he took out Chris Tuchscherer, Ben Rothwell and now Cheick Kongo. One thing is clear: the 37-year-old fighter from New Zealand is not done yet.

Underground in Vietnam: Caves, tunnels and wine cellars

by Karryn Miller

Vietnam may be focused on building upwards, but what's happening underground is perhaps more exciting than the latest skyscraper -- think hidden caves large enough for 40-story buildings and wartime tunnels traversing the earth beneath your feet.

Here are some of Vietnam?s unique sites below the surface.

World?s biggest cave

A Manhattan city block, buildings included, would fit quite nicely inside parts of Son Doong cave in central Vietnam?s Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park.

But you won?t find anything remotely urban here. In the world?s largest cave passage lofty stalagmites, some shooting as high as 70 meters, stand in for concrete office blocks while shafts of light from above have led to wild gardens taking root on the cave?s floor.

Son Doong is one of the many caves underneath the 85,754 hectares of park, which holds UNESCO World Heritage site honors. While the limestone karst landscape on top is impressive, the system of caves, grottoes and underground rivers give visitors a distinct ?Journey to the Center of the Earth? experience.

Need it or not, here's another dose of luxury for Bangkok

Park HyattA graphic rendering of the Park Hyatt Bangkok, which features a ?twisted coil? exterior design. Pack your designer luggage. Bangkok is set to get another 222 luxury hotel rooms, adding to an already vast number of accommodation options for travelers in search of high thread counts.

Global hotel brand Hyatt confirmed this week it will open its first Park Hyatt -- at a cost of 5 billion baht -- in Thailand in 2014.

On the plus side, Bangkok?s embattled travel industry could use some positivity as the news proves that despite the recent bomb blasts and floods, the city won't go down the tourism tubes without a fight.

Park Hyatt is the American corporation?s top luxury brand, reserved for cities with strong demand for posh digs. Luxury travelers have long been in love with Bangkok, though one has to ask who is going to fill all these rooms in an already crowded market.

Rates will start from US$300 a night, putting it up there at the top end of the luxury field with the likes of the Mandarin Oriental, Peninsula, Four Seasons, Shangri-La, St. Regis, Banyan Tree, Kempinski and the soon-to-open W.

Jake Ellenberger survives against Diego Sanchez at UFC on Fuel TV 1; was it enough to earn a title shot?

Just when Jake Ellenberger could see himself signing a contract to fight for the UFC interim welterweight title, along came a relentless Diego Sanchez in the final minutes of what was previously a one-sided fight.

Ellenberger survived an absolute onslaught down the stretch to gain a unanimous decision victory, 29-28 on all three cards, in the main event of the UFC's first main card on Fuel TV.

Georges St-Pierre's status for the remainder for the rest of 2012 is very up in the air. The promotion looks like it wants interim champ Carlos Condit to fight at least one more time before he could possibly get GSP. Ellenberger (27-5, 6-1 UFC) is in the mix, but one has to wonder if he did enough against a guy who many feel is on the downside of his career.

[Related: Yahoo! Sports pound-for-pound MMA rankings]

At minus-350, Ellenberger entered the fight as a sizable favorite, but Sanchez wouldn't give in.

The Nebraska native was schooling Sanchez on the feet. The former "Ultimate Fighter 1" champ looked tired by the middle of the second round and was whiffing on most of his shots. All that while eating jabs and counterpunches. A hard punch in the first appeared to have broken Sanchez's nose, but he kept coming.

"Diego's known for that. He's the toughest guy I've ever fought. No matter what, he's in there every minute of the fight. It's a great test for me. It's an honor to fight him," Ellenberger told UFC announcer Jon Anik.

By the middle of the third round, Ellenberger had outstruck Sanchez 85-32. He was cruising but then mysteriously hit the wall and stopped using his right hand.

With just over two minutes left, Sanchez caught Ellenberger with a left body kick that forced the hunter to become the hunted. Sanchez landed a straight left that jarred Ellenberger. That's when the underdog decided it was go time.

He landed a left to the body which convinced Ellenberger to go for a takedown. He got it with 1:30 left, but Sanchez refused to stay down and got right back up where he scrambled to work hip control. Ellenberger was exhausted so Sanchez jumped on his back and got a hook in. He tried to get a choke on two occasions in between getting off 29 shots. There were still 34 seconds left and Sanchez actually flattened out Ellenberger for a few seconds. Sanchez again tried to get his arm in there for a choke, but Ellenberger had just enough presence of mind to keep his chin tucked.

"That's a tough position. I was tired, but I'm just trying to fight through. I've been there a million times. You just gotta stay in it mentally," said Ellenberger.

[Also: 'Rampage', 'Dragon' or wait: What to do with Dan Henderson?]

Sanchez, 30, explained after the fight that he battled an ankle injury three weeks before the event but didn't want to pull out of this televised fight.

"Jake's incredibly tough. I was hitting him with some hard shots. I thought he was going to go out. I thought he was going to give me the back. I was just trying to get the stoppage. but it didn't go my way this time," said Sanchez.

Sanchez (23-5, 12-5 UFC) finished the fight with a huge lump on his nose and deep vertical cut on his eyebrow. He absorbed three huge elbows in the second round that could've finished a lot of fighters in the welterweight division, but that's not what Sanchez does.

Struve's improved striking too much for Herman

Stefan Struve got off to a slow start, but once he heated up Dave Herman was in big trouble.

The tallest fighter in the UFC began putting his strikes together in the second round. A left hook, inside kick-uppercut combination dropped Herman to his back where Struve mounted him and got off 52 unanswered shots before referee Josh Rosenthal stopped things at the 3:52 mark of the second to give the 23-year-old Struve his seventh victory in the UFC.

[Also: Watch Jon Jones get attacked by a police dog]

Herman (21-3, 1-1 UFC) is either crazy or fearless. Those aren't always good qualities when you reached the highest levels of fighting. He's super athletic at 6-foot-4, 235, but Herman simply made it too easy for the 6-foot-11 to reach him on the feet.

Herman won the first round with a varied striking game and good head movement. But he got too comfortable at the end of the round. His corner told him to standing right in front of Struve (23-5, 7-3 UFC), but he didn't he listen and continued to do so in the second.
