Tiny blisters type a couple of layers beneath the skin, work their way up, and then you lose a couple of layers of skin and it cracks. In case you've by no means had the underlying layers of skin exposed, it's really sensitive and painful. Typically it mostly only occurs to me in dry-skin weather, like wintertime, but it's also aggravated by tension. This happened whilst I was extremely stressed. Took this photo to show the
